Residential Moving Tips
Moving to a new home can be stressful, whether you're moving across the country or just a few towns away. One way of making the process easier and ensuring a smooth move is by planning for the big day well in advance. Waiting to make preparations and decisions at the last minute may add to your stress.
There are many things to consider when you're moving, and deciding whether to hire professional movers or not should be at the top of your list. If you're moving during an especially busy time, such as during the summer months, you'll need to reserve your preferred movers as far in advance as possible.
Hiring professional movers to do the job for you during your move is one of the simplest ways to reduce move-day stress. Not only will you know that your belongings will be safely transported from your old to your new home, but you also won't have to do any heavy lifting. This is especially important if you live up a few flights of stairs, own a lot of heavy furniture, or have any physical impairments.
Here are some additional tips for making your moving day successful:
1. Pack Delicate Items Yourself
Even if you're hiring professional movers to both pack and move your items, consider handling your most delicate items yourself. For instance, if you have family heirlooms such as picture frames, artwork, decorations, and jewelry, wrap and pack them before the movers arrive. Label the boxes and write "fragile" on them so that the movers know to handle them with extra care. Transporting delicate items in your personal vehicle is another option if you have enough room.
2. Don't Overstuff Boxes
Although you may want to save money on costly moving boxes, resist overstuffing them to save space. Having fewer boxes to transport won't be helpful for the movers if they are too heavy to move. Also, overstuffing boxes may cause them to tear or break apart, making a mess on moving day. Avoid placing too many heavy items into one large box as well. It'll be easier to move several lighter, smaller boxes, especially when they're stacked onto a dolly.
3. Provide Easy Access
Prior to the movers arriving on moving day, make an easy path through your home so that they can easily get in and out. Stack boxes against walls, and remove any clutter, such as toys and rugs, from the floors. Make sure the hallways and doorways are clear, and keep dogs and other pets in a closed room or kennel. You don't want to have to worry about them running out of an open door or biting a mover.
