Managing and maintaining a storage unit can be a daunting task, but it is necessary to keep your space neat and tidy. There are certain things that you can do to stay on top of maintenance and prevent mess or disorganization from building up to the point that catching up on the tasks is an all-day event. Here is a list of tips that you can employ to make the management of your storage unit much easier on you.

Keep a Brush or Shovel Handy to Clear Away the Debris

Inside the door of the storage unit you should keep a broom accessible so that you can clear away the debris and leaves that build up around the door. If a buildup of debris is not cleared, it can get into the unit or come in between the door and the floor, preventing the door from closing properly. You should also make sure that you have a shovel handy to clear away the snow from the front of the door. When the snow melts, if it is not cleared it could flood the inside of the unit and potentially damage the contents of the storage unit.

Use a Flashlight to Locate Items

Rather than stumble around in the dark if you visit your unit at night, you can keep a flashlight attached to a piece of string and hang it on the wall located just inside the door of the locker. A flashlight will allow you to shine a light on the contents on the unit and locate the item you are looking for without having to tear apart all the boxes to find it.

Keep Track of the Contents with a List

Knowing exactly what is stored inside the unit will help you keep things organized. Keep a clipboard with an itemized list of each item inside the unit along with an assigned corresponding number that matches the box that it is stored in. This will allow you to quickly reference the list when you need to locate a specific item, and then you can search for the exact box that it is stored in.

There are a number of things that you can do to organize and protect the contents of your unit. Also, talking with local storage vendors like Island Movers is a great way to learn exactly what types of units are available, such as ones powered with electricity or that are temperature controlled.
